The referee calls off the game between Wellington and Avalon Under 21 after Teua Rawiri went down with a head injury.

A Wellington club rugby game dedicated to a team-mate who died this week was called off early after a player suffered a head injury.

Play was halted shortly into the second half of the game between Wellington and Avalon Colts (Under 21) at Hataitai Park on Saturday afternoon as Teua Rawiri collapsed after an apparent collision with an Avalon player.

The Wellington Football Club colts member appeared to convulse on the ground as spectators called for an ambulance and team-mates rushed over with blankets.

The Wellington Under 21 team wore black armbands and observed a minute's silence before kick-off to honour Daniel Baldwin, who died this week .

Rawiri was a team-mate of 19-year-old Daniel Baldwin, who died on Wednesday night. Baldwin collapsed during a game last week Saturday.

The Wellington Football Club Colts voted earlier in the week to go ahead with Saturday's match, but the venue was switched to Hataitai Park from Avalon, to allow the club to pay tribute and dedicate the day to Baldwin.

By the time Wellington Free Ambulance staff arrived, Rawiri was conscious and had reportedly cracked a few jokes. 

Wellington Rugby communications manager Toby Robson confirmed Rawiri was released from hospital after an assessment.
