Legendary All Black and Taranaki rugby player Ross Brown, 79, has died this morning.

Brown, regarded as one the finest inside backs Taranaki has produced, died about 1.30am at Thornleigh Park rest home in New Plymouth.

Brown played 25 games, including 16 test matches, for the All Blacks from 1955 to 1962, most notably as second five-eighth and first five-eighth in the historic 1956 series victory over South Africa.

He scored 12 points for the national side, consisting of three tries and one dropped goal.

Brown played 144 games for Taranaki and was captain of the side during its 1963-65 Ranfurly Shield era.

He was known for his ability to drop goals, landing 10 in the 1964 season, including three in one shield defence against North Auckland.

His health had been failing in recent years and deteriorated further in the past couple of weeks.
