Former All Blacks captain Tom Willis retires All Blacks to play at La Plata against Argentina Ian Foster reveals why ABs news was a secret Steve Hansen recruits old mate McLean on merit Fox 'on the outside looking in' for All Blacks Ian Foster named All Blacks assistant coach Hansen has much to prove as All Blacks coach Aussie McLean to be added to ABs coaching team Headgear won't protect players from concussion 'Sir Ted' still courted for help with All Blacks

The All Blacks coaches were ruthless with their axing of Liam Messam but spoke with hope for their latest back row that now has Kieran Read playing out of position at No 8 to face the French in the second test.

Cleaned out by the French as a trio, the selectors have now cleaned out their own back row themselves.

One of the changes was forced with specialist openside Tanerau Latimer coming in for the injured Adam Thomson.

With a fit Jerome Kaino available there was no hesitation in handing him back his old blindside flanker's jersey and that meant a decision at No 8.

Read got the job easily over Messam.

In other changes to the starting XV, Conrad Smith comes back into the backline at the expense of Isaia Toeava and Keven Mealamu takes over at hooker for the injured Andrew Hore

New recruits Aled de Malmanche and George Whitelock are on the bench alongside Toeava.

There was no such luxury for Messam.

"Toeava and Messam didn't play as well as we hoped last week," said Henry.

"We didn't think Messam played as well as he normally could play. So it's a bit of a form thing. That's what selection is all about I guess."

Forwards coach Steve Hansen explained Messam's departure in more depth.

"Liam just has to get more consistent within the game. He's a real athlete and does some wonderful things and then he can do some silly things that are prone to error," said Hansen.

"That's something that he has to work on. He's been working on it for a while. He probably didn't have his best night in that department last week. You can't pick them all and unfortunately for Liam when you go to your bench you need somebody in the loose forwards who can play seven. So George Whitelock gets that job."

Hansen has to go back to the drawing board with another combination as the All Blacks really feel the heat of their missing leaders Richie McCaw and Rodney So'oialo.

"It's a challenge for all three of them as a new combo," said Hansen.

He backed Kaino's experience to be a big lift in that department.

"Kieran now has another test and he's an experienced player as a (red and black) captain. He and Jerome will drag Lats (Latimer) through. I was comfortable with Lats' 20 minutes last week.

Ad Feedback

"If we can give them a platform with the tight five then they will be able to operate."

A lot of it seemed to be spoken in hope as much as conviction.

Kaino has played virtually all of his season with the Blues at No 8, but Hansen was adamant that he was best suited to No 6, particularly with his defence off the scrum, something that was exposed by the French last week.

Hansen believed Read's future as a starting player in the All Blacks might have to be at No 8, backed up by his blindside play.

Henry also backed Read to step up: "He played quite a bit there for the Crusaders. We thought he played pretty well at six last week and on the form of last week's game he was probably our best loose forward. It was a matter of fitting Jerome in at six because that's where he plays most of his rugby.

The All Blacks are delighted to have Smith back, for his form, experience and his combination with Ma'a Nonu.

The team had a solid training session in wintry conditions in Wellington and Henry noted the hunger and enthusiasm that usually comes after a rare loss.

"That's what you would expect. It's good," he said.

The All Blacks had worked particularly hard at tackle ball situations in their training. Attention had also been given to the scrum where they were surprisingly inferior in Dunedin.

NEW ZEALAND: Mils Muliaina (captain), Cory Jane, Conrad Smith, Ma'a Nonu, Joe Rokocoko, Stephen Donald, Jimmy Cowan, Kieran Read, Tanerau Latimer, Jerome Kaino, Isaac Ross, Brad Thorn, Neemia Tialata, Keven Mealamu, Tony Woodcock. Reserves: Aled de Malmanche, John Afoa, Bryn Evans, George Whitelock, Piri Weepu, Luke McAlister, Isaia Toeava

Whitelock is pretty good, I could see him being a good all black, Kieran Read is a good player but too puny really in test rugby, esp for no8. Same with Thomson who is a beanpole who gets snapped in half in tackles and blown off the ball, I dont care what his weight is listed as, hes weak on the ball. We really need that big bopper loose forward that isnt a crap player like Lauaki is.

Not a clue. The AB's coaches need to look more at their own performance or rather the lack of it before they slag the players. Yet again we get the "we will learn from it" etc coach-speak. When are those people going to admit they go into a game with no Plan B. As to the excuse that the rules changed (particularly the maul) from Super 14 to the Test, Hello !!!!! are these guy's not professionals. At a risk of flogging a dead horse - the NZRFU badly missed the bus when it passed over Deans.

Typical selectors using Messam as the scape goat and now picking players to play in positions not accustomed to playing in. Drop Donald Duck - he has no vision, Tialata - over-rated, Joe - no confidence, Cowen - slow pass. Kaino - good but coming off injury and limited rugby and is going to struggle. Not looking forward to the 2nd test, and we better not lose to the Aussies otherwise its - Sack the coaches lol.

Jero #71 - really? Get rid of Henry and pick Deans? Are you sure? Cos one has an 85% win record and one a 66% record. Can you guess which is which?

Do the math.

Thomas Waldrom must be the most unlucky No8 ever, hes got all the skills and is as hard as nails and would of shored up the loose ball. Good to see they have a quality No 7 playing this week, Richie must have been ripping his hair out watching our No7 standing out in the midfield. As for Henry and Co, NZRFU would be mad to give them an extension to RWC, we need a change of direction.

Mick #10

James O'Connor would have torn our backline to shreads. I just hope Robbie Deans labours under the impression that the All Blacks would be too intimidating for a teenager.

Keep Him Away!!!

Always been a fan of the "coaching panel" but not a huge fan of the "selection panel"... Why have they never learnt to never play players out of position because it NEVER works! And why drop players after one average performance but retain players who have played a shocking if not crap performance??? I.e. Messam-Read? I would love to comment more but still can not get my head round that call. To me Messam is a young version of Zinny, give him a chance, look at how good Zinny finished up. Ice/ Mr Gold or what ever you want to call him for Masanga? (Even though he didn’t even get on the park but at least he didn’t drop the ball in warm up) Piri was hands down more destructive (and constructive) than Jimmy (to busy thinking of his next warm drink perhaps)... We need passion, flair, positive play, and not tradesman who can fill gaps, again it never works and it never will.

well done coaches just what i wanted you to do,you guys have proven once again that you have no idea and with any luck after this saturdays game we will be talking about your axing because with you incharge we have no show in 2011!Messam needs to be nurtured not used as a scape goat.

Jero   #75   09:09 pm Jun 16 2009

Get rid of the 3 wisemen before its too late! 2011 just around the corner, they should have picked Deans!!

James   #74   08:22 pm Jun 16 2009

Great replace Messam a form player who wasn't appalling, with a loose forward from an appalling Super 14 team that has done very little all season. Then drop the best winger in the Super 14 who didn't even get on the park, but keep Joe Rokocoko who has done nothing all year.

Finally what is Toeava still doing in there? Jane covers FB, McAllistair 1st 5 and midfield and Weepu HB and 1st 5. We don't need another utility especially not a useless one. Give Dagg or Masaga a go, someone who can truly create something.

If all these Blues that Henry is carrying are really great players, Pat Lam must be the worst coach around bcause they have all done nothing this year.
