All Blacks shake off the rust
BY DUNCAN JOHNSTONE
All Blacks coach Graham Henry praised his team's composure and character as they gutsed out a crucial 22-16 win over Australia in the opening Tri-Nations match at Eden Park on Saturday night.
New Zealand rebounded from a 0-10 deficit to dominate the Wallabies and keep a firm grip on the Bledisloe Cup which is again a four-match series.
Having not played for three weeks and with key players Richie McCaw, Rodney So'oialo and Andrew Hore returning to the test scene off a quick diet of club football, the All Blacks were in Henry's words "rusty".
"It was a game based on character," said Henry.
"We got behind early by 10 and I guess there are two ways you can go then. But the guys showed some character and that was very pleasing.
"Some guys hadn't played for a while; they were a bit rusty and got better as the game went on."
Henry believes the performance and the result bodes well for the Tri-Nations where the All Blacks now face the Springboks on consecutive weekends in the republic.
"I think we should get better now," he said as the All Blacks prepared to leave for Bloemfontein at 4.30am on Sunday morning.
"We have a foundation to build on. Some of the players haven't played for a while, so we should get better for the Tri-Nations."
McCaw, who scored the All Blacks' only try, was just as thrilled with his team.
"I think it was up there," he said of the way his side fought back. "We had to get out of second gear and I'm proud of the way we did that and for the last 20 we didn't give them a lot of options.
"I think we will see it as a good effort when we reflect on the courage and composure we showed to come back and get the result we were after."
McCaw was typically modest about his own efforts.
"I was a bit rusty really. It's a long way from Christchurch Park to playing test football.
"I was talking to a few of the guys who hadn't played a lot for a wee while and it was about finding your feet in test rugby again.
"But I'm happy we got the result and I think next week will be even better. There is room for improvement, that is great."

I have to laugh when I see the Henry supporters crowing about this and raving about this one performance "Egg on your face" etc etc. I would imagine the one with egg on his smug old face is Mr Henry himself... who tore NZ rugby apart in 2007 with his 'reconditioning' programme, arrogantly stated "judge me on the world cup" then utilised the 'old boys network' to get himself reinstated after the abominable disaster that was his failed World Cup campaign. It amazes me that after one tight, 'could have gone either way' victory people claim "He has silenced his critics"...well this critic won't be silenced, and won't forget 2007 in a hurry.
It's quite sad that when the AB's do well nobody has anything to say! This time on sunday morning after the Italy test - there were HEAPS of comments. Well done AB's you did well. The perfect warmup for the Springboks next week.
Please, Wayne Smith, please watch the footage of how the Aussie backline ran and passed.
Gutsy win. Well done to the team. I'm hoping for a bit more razzle dazzle next week, but they'll need that kind of guts to win the tight ones.
A gutsy win as stated and onward and upward from here. A 10th tri nations title looks good. Henry 4 Deans 1. It's getting boring.
I believe that game last night shacked off a few critics last night - I for one didn't give them much hope, and im sure a lot more didn't ever - full of Praise for Donald.. - Good too see him back, but still sooner we get Carter back the better - Much tougher task next week at Bloomfortain.. Go get'em boys!!
This win is for all those who have been criticizing the Abs esp S Donald!! Go ABS keep the momentum, SA will be strong at home but you can do it.
The AB's didn't just win because we had the senior players back. We also won because we didn't have game-losers on the field like Tauiava and McCalister.
Good to see the AB's with a first up win. Their next game is going to be a huge step up so hope they can do it.
One thing about the Wallabies; does anyon know why they would stand 20m away when th Haka is being performed? Is their some sort of rule to say they aren't allowed to be closer?!

Some people are never happy are they? They thrive in negativity. I'm not saying the performance was perfect and suddenly all our problems have disappeared. But the win was great. After all we won against a team that was supposed to beat us by 10-15 points according to some doomsayers. We beat them so that means that we are still up there. OK we may even get done by the Boks next week or the week after but that's in the future and that doesn't detract from the fact that we still won Saturday's game for goodness sake.
There will undoubtably still be some Deans fans out there and that's OK, you are entitled to your opinion but should you not at least concede and give Henry some credit? He now leads Deans 4-1. Ask yourself this: if Deans is so fantastic and he's got such a good side up and running, and then they get beaten, then what does this say about the side that beat them? It's all about expectations - if you expected Deans' team to stick it to Henry's team and they didn't then your expectations weren't met and accordingly you re-assess your views. Facts speak for themselves, you can't argue facts with hypotheticals.
And another thing, I'm very much aware that the high expectations of the NZ public, harsh as it may is, is what makes the ABs such a great team but I'm actually not that worried when we don't play all that convincingly between RWCs (as long as it's only temporary). To me, it's an opportunity to re-assess and get a sense of reality before the RWC comes around. I'd even rather have us lose a game or two outside of RWCs if it means that we actually win the damn thing in 2011 or whenever. So relax people, I now don't expect the ABs to perform at 100% in all tests so long as it gives us the greatest chance of winning the RWC.
