Bryan Habana's brilliant hattrick gave the Barbarians an historic 25-18 win over the All Blacks and brought the tourists end of year tour to a disappointing end.

It was only the second time the famous invitation side had beaten the All Blacks, coming 36 years after the 1973 side's famous win at Cardiff Arms Park.

The loss leaves the All Blacks with a season record of ten wins and five losses, sadly blighting a bright finish to the season that saw them win six tests in succession.

In front of 63,551 fans the Barbarians, made up largely of South African and Australian players matched the All Blacks in every area with Habana's blistering pace the difference in an entertaining match.

There was an eerie de ja vu about replacement first five Morne Steyn's late penalty as the Springbok players in the side celebrated their fourth win over New Zealand this year.

The All Blacks will be disappointed they conceded two soft first half tries, which both saw Habana sprinting away from the defence.

The match highlighted the difference between the All Blacks first string players and the next tier and in particular at first five where Stephen Donald had a poor first half including mis-cued kicks and juggled passes.

Donald threw the crucial intercept that saw Habana sprint 80 metres on the stroke of halftime to put his side up 14-10 at the break in what was a crucial boost to their confidence.

Midfielders Jaque Fourie and Jamie Roberts were a constant danger in a match that was as entertaining as it was close with Barbarians coach Nick Matllett's star-studded cast throwing the ball wide at every chance.

The All Blacks coaches had taken a punt in leaving out Dan Carter and when they subbed Richie McCaw early in the second half the Barbarians loose duo of Schalk Burger and George Smith thrived.

Habana was brilliant in every respect. His first try came after impressive fullback Drew Mitchell pinched the ball from an unattended All Black ruck and fed his flying wing for a 90 metre crowd pleaser.

Habana's third try on 69 minutes came after he had earlier been knocked out saving a try at the other end tackling All Blacks halfback Brendon Leonard.

Leonard, who braved out the final half hour with a broken nose, was one of the few players to boost his tour grade with a sharp effort that finally saw his sniping running game unleashed and some try saving cover tackles made.

But overall it was an unorganised display from the All Blacks.

They ended the match with Sitiveni Sivivatu at centre and flanker Liam Messam on the wing for the final 18 minutes after hamstring injuries claimed Tamati Ellison and then Zac Guildford.

The tourist's scored two tries of their own, wing Ben Smith getting his first try in a black jersey after 24 minutes after Luke McAlister had spit the midfield defence.

Ellison drew in two defenders on the blindside and Cory Jane sucked in Mitchell to put his wing over.

McAlister had a strong match in attack and defence and formed a handy midfield combination with Ellison before the latter man cried off injured at halftime.

Ad Feedback

Lock Anthony Boric capped a strong match when he scored with 20 minutes to play and a comeback was on the cards, but Delany missed the conversion.

Habana got his third, Steyn cancelled out a Delany penalty and the All Black faltered at the finish line after seven weeks on the road.

All Blacks 18 (Ben Smith, Anthony Boric, tries, Stephen Donald pen, con. Mike Delany pen)

Barbarians 25 (Bryan Habana 3 tries, Matt Giteau 2 con, pen, Morne Steyn pen). Halftime: 14-10 Barbarians

Henry for PM @ 129,

Are you simply trying to convince yourself that it (RWC) is insignificant, so that it does not matter if/when AB choke in 2011. News flash, Ranking in any sport means nothing if you can't produce the goods at the big show. Your argument is akin to saying that being NRL undefeated Minor Premiers is better than winning the Grand Final when you lose same. Ridiculous really.

Henry said this tour was about giving a few of the younger guys a chance to prove themselves and put their names forward in the run up to the world cup. I am sure the Baa Baa's game gave Henry & Co the look they needed, but in saying that he is probably a bit worried now!!

Henry for PM   #129   05:29 pm Dec 07 2009

Gridiron of course he would want to..cos the All Blacks are THE BEST TEAM IN THE WORLD! The IRB rankings prove it. Not some stupid rigged world cup or some dodgy referee. Put Habana up against Sivi or Nonu ..watch them squash him into the dirt. How many of those Baa Baa's would even make the All Blacks top team I ask you? Not Giteau, he is useless, not Burger, too slow, definitely not any of the Pommies. It doesn't matter anyway cos the rankings are out and The All Blacks are world champs yet again!!!

The Barbarians are a team of superstars? Some of them so super that they were too good to be in the AB side. Hey Joe? No one should worry about the score. Provided you win and win well. The Barbarians had about 1 week preparation, as a team. Henry knows that he needs Carter to win. That is why he was rushed back in at supersonic speed, after his injury. A dangerous tackle which takes out DC at the beginning of the world cup would spell the end for the AB's. Likewise if McCaw gets himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. The worrying thing is that the opposition are well aware of the reliance the AB's have on these two blokes.

@henry for pm I don't think that Bryan Habana would ever wanna play for the AB'S even if they offered it to him on a plate mate...the AB'S are not worth playing for...I think the Ab's wish they had some1 like Bryan Habana on their team!!!

Henry knew the Baabaas players that were going to play the Ab's ..but still he chose his side... I just think that he was scared to loose with a supposedly A Team..it would be far easier and more acceptable for the supporters to loose with a supposedly B Team..just saying!!!

Seriously, worrying about the score in a Barbarians game is a bit like worrying about the score in a Harlem Globetrotters game.

hahah I can;t believe it. If AB 'fans' were Transformers, they would have to be called:

'NEGATORRRRRS'

For all the broken records that harp on about cheapening the jersey, you conveniently forget that they had NO midweek games in which to test other players. Do you all really believe that we should play the same top team week in/week out? What happens if 1 (or more) of them go down in RWC final? You would all be moaning about the lack of depth.

And for all you people saying that losses like this are taking away from the aura and invincibility of the ABs, do you realise that the ABs winning % today is actually far higher than the era's gone by, out of which the 'aura' developed. Funny how we romanticise the past, when in actual fact we lost more games back then.

Finally, we are lucky in that we back a team that very rarely lose yet we are consistently taught a lesson by fans from other countries who get in behind their teams, despite their teams performing poorly on a regular basis.

Just think about it.

that was the last chance for Messam. massively over-hyped and just not consistent enough in an international. in NPC his lack of work can be overlooked, but here... no place for drifters.
