All Blacks statue comes to life, stuns kids
A Northland school was stunned recently when their papier mache statue of All Blacks captain Richie McCaw came to life in ther classroom.
Watch the video below as pupils at Raurimu Avenue School get a huge surprise when what they anticipated as a simple unveiling of their two months of hard work turned into the real thing.
"I thought it was the fake one but then when I saw it wasn't I got real excited," nine-year-old Steve Para Richard told the Northern Advocate.
Shocked pupils sat in silence initially before comments started to flow, followed by clapping and later a haka.
McCaw said the project was pretty amazing.
"It's something that when I was a young fella I never thought that children at a school would make a statue of me ... it's a pretty amazing thing that you've done," he said.
Principal Sally Wilson kept the visit a tight secret, not even telling her husband.
"I had to tell a few lies saying I was entered in an art competition for principals and the kids really believed I was in one. Parents came down to the school to see how I was going in it," she told the paper.
All Blacks sponsor adidas arranged McCaw's visit to acknowledge their effort in the Give Your All Campaign recognising the nation's most dedicated All Blacks fans.
"The children from Raurimu Ave School have set the challenge for All Black fans nationwide," Adidas marketing manager Nadia Scott said.

Noting like a bit of independent thought to get some people reaching for their pitchforks is there?
Cletus #53 and the 'big ups to Adidas' set
It looks like Stuff is happy with name-calling but consider this - if a muppet is a sock puppet that does the bidding of a hand, and Adidas is the hand that wants to go elbow-deep, who are the real muppets here?
Wake up. Lucky the All Blacks weren't as docile as you lot on Saturday.
lizzzy......what a killjoy you are. Did you not see the looks on those kids faces?. They are KIDS for gods sake. Sporting heroes are who they look up to at this stage of their lives. That would give those kids a positive view of school.
Name a doctor or researcher who would get such a response.
Great initiative on the head teachers part to arrange all of that.
I think it is great when All Blacks take time out of their otherwise reasonably hectic schedule to visit young fans...and potentially future All Blacks players. However....what about the huge effort those kids put into the project in the first place. Well done to everyone involved including the kids.
thats awesome....love it.
lizzy you're flying off on some stupid tangent, doctors and such come to schools all the time.....but thats not what this was about, it was about richie, and he's a national hero, whether your ignorantly fail to see it or not. for some of these kids who dont go on to become physicists or whatever, this could be one of the best things in their lives. let it be.
This is news? How boring, omg stuff. News is when the Springboks are going to thrash your precious All Blacks!
Good on Richie and everyone else involved for making this happen for the kids, It is always great to see people doing something to bring good memorable times into kids lives. Leave the negative comments out for a change people.
No one is "being told what to think and how to feel" You do that all in your own head, and make yourself believe that. "Ans as for Can we please encourage our kids to have role models such as the dozens of kiwi doctors and researchers" Yes they are good role models. What is wrong with having Sporting athletes as heroes and role models? They are Fit, Disciplined, lead healthy lives, and show respect. Are these not good values to have? Look at the good.
Fantastic stuff. I remember meeting Grant Batty at a similar age under similar circumstances at school in Wellington in the early 70's. It has stayed with me all these years. I am an All Black fan who has been sustained through the dark days of RWC dissapointments since 1991 through touches like Richie McCaw has shown here. I dont care if we win 2011. Just keep up the human touches and playing fantastic rugby as in the past 3 tests. Actually, I would desperately prefer we won....
@ Lizzie - You sound like a liberal. What a ridiculous comment to make! Go back to your boring life and let the kids have a bit of fun! Unbelievable! It's people like you that are the reason all the good ads on t.v are played after ten!
Good on you Richie, the children were obviously inspired by your visit!
