The new All Blacks jersey, touted as a leap into the future, has been attracting attention for the wrong reasons.

Manufactured by adidas, the jersey has been two years in the making and was unveiled for the All Blacks' match against South Africa in Wellington last Saturday. Controversy now surrounds the local price of the jersey.

An All Blacks replica jersey costs between $190 and $220 in New Zealand but is listed for US$79.99 (NZ$92.88) and US$89.99 (NZ$104.48) on worldrugbyshop.com. Shipping costs another US$15 and takes two or three weeks.

Adidas New Zealand country manager David Huggett acknowledged the price difference but said the recommended retail price of the jersey had not changed since 2009, with the exception of the GST increase.

"The reasons for these types of price differences are many, such as the costs associated with running a business in each country, for both the manufacturer and retailers as well as external factors such as currency exchange."

Mr Huggett said people also needed to consider the costs of shipping and handling.

Rugby Union commercial manager Paul Dalton said the sporting body was comfortable with adidas' pricing.

Retailers Association chief executive John Albertson encouraged consumers to buy locally, though he understood people would buy online based on price.

The price is crazy. I bought an England WRC shirt (I'm english) in Wellington last week for $110. How can Adidas claim its shipping costs, etc when Nike can do it. They just seem to be trying to fleece you Kiwis!

I have a friend who works for adidas, he tells me the version being sold in NZ is a special edition made from a material which repels tears, therefore reducing the threat of tear stained jerseys.

So how much are the RWC tickets? Really????

No point in complaining about the price. Simple way to deal with this: Don't buy the stuff unless you can be certain of being able to flog it off to some rugby mad fans willing to pay an even higher price.

Crusadist #15 - and when the store isn't there anymore because its gone out of business

Don't agree with the Adidas jersey price but I can assure you the vast majority of retailers are ripping no one off. Margins are small and most are trying to keep their heads above water and pay their workers who are normal folk

We are an agrarian economy: milk 'em or fleece 'em. And I am not talking about the cows and sheep.

@ #14 Rip Off: My current AB's Jersey (Which I bought overseas, much cheaper) says made in asia somewhere.

just as an addition, the jersey is worth NZ $187 Ex GST, fort he Rugby world Cup Version, which is the same but has the RWC logo. I'm guessing the majority of that $30-00 goes to the RWC or the IRB? also take into account local freight . international freight GST and the IRB/RWC Committees. and you have your price.

the only question I really have is, why the demand is higher overseas, than in NZ where the bloody team is from. I realise also that some of that demand is the online buyers. but still. Peace.

No way would I buy anything expensive in NZ AT the moment, I have bought Football shirts, PC parts, contact lens and even a motorbike helmet all online at great prices due to high mark ups here.no problems at all with service.
