Students at Auckland's Western Springs College have played some unconventional rugby with the All Blacks in a surprise art project.

In a video posted on YouTube this week the pupils, dressed in overalls and goggles, are seen throwing fluro paint dipped rugby balls, wrestling and creating artistic havoc with All Blacks Ma'a Nonu, Ali Williams, Keven Mealamu, Aaron Cruden, Zac Guildford and Tamati Ellison.

The video is by Random Rugby and on their Facebook page it says the students had no warning their rugby idols would participate in the project.

"These Western Springs College students got the surprise of their lives when six All Blacks showed up to lend a hand on this random art project," the website says.

"Will your school be next? Stay tuned for more random rugby surprises!"

The school's head of sports, Peter McIntyre, said he hadn't seen the video but it was becoming popular with students online.

McIntyre said the school would be able to comment on Friday.

Is Richie McCaw now the greatest All Black of all time?

Yes. His achievements set him apart from the rest.

No. Sir Colin Meads is still the greatest.

Not sure. It's too hard to compare players from different eras.
