The Black Ferns have claimed fifth place at the women's rugby World Cup, thumping the United States 55-5 in their final match in France today.

New Zealand had too much power and pace for the Americans, running in nine tries in Paris.

Right wing Honey Hireme benefitted from the Black Ferns' constant attack, scoring four of the tries.

The United States could only manage an intercept try early in the second half as they were overwhelmed.

It was a strong finish to the tournament from New Zealand, though little consolation for the four-time champions who failed to make the medal matches for the first time.

England claimed the trophy with a 21-9 win over a dogged Canada side in the final.

It was England's second title following their 1994 success in Scotland.

France beat Ireland 25-18 to claim the bronze medal.

In other results, Australia thrashed Wales 30-3, Spain blitzed South Africa 36-0 and Samoa beat Kazakhstan 31-0.

New Zealand won praise for how they managed to hold their composure late in the tournament after their disappointment of losing a crucial qualifying match to Ireland.

"When this New Zealand get things right, they really do get things right - they can be really proud of how they bounced back from what must have been such as blow of missing out on the semifinals,'' former England international Sue Day said as part of the tournament's commentary team.

''They've got young players they can build a team around so they just need to regroup and think it over.

New Zealand 55 (Aroaha Savage, Rawinia Everitt, Shakira Baker, Selica Winiata, Honey Hereme 4, Aleisha Brazier tries;  Kelly Brazier 5 con) United States 5 (Amber Rozier try)
