Pumas still no guarantee for Four Nations

Argentina would have to be able to field their best team to be included in a Four Nations tournament with Australia, New Zealand and South Africa from 2012.

The Pumas are not yet assured of inclusion despite the International Rugby Board agreeing to provide financial support, says SANZAR board member and Australian Rugby Union chief executive John O'Neill.

IRB chairman Bernard Lapasset said yesterday it would provide a one-off contribution of $US2 million (NZ$2.6m) so the Pumas would be able to have regular matches against top-quality opposition.

While O'Neill was pleased the IRB would provide substantial financial backing, more work was required, in particular ensuring that amendments were made to an IRB regulation to guarantee that European clubs, where virtually all of the leading Pumas are contracted, allow them to play in the southern hemisphere tournament.

''We've made good progress, but it's not time to pop the champagne corks,'' O'Neill said. ''SANZAR have always accepted bringing Argentina into an expanded Tri Nations is a good idea. But that is only based on conditions being satisfied.

''An important condition revolves around the financials. We do not want to be any worse off than we are under the current format. We went to the IRB with the financial difference it would be to bring Argentina in, which resulted in the IRB putting in more than $US2 million a year. That doesn't fully compensate the SANZAR unions, but it goes pretty close. All credit to the IRB for doing that.''

But it was as crucial that there was ''certainty that the Argentinian team will be their best team''.

As the expanded tournament will be played between August-October, the Pumas will have to be released by their clubs.

''Currently IRB regulation number nine about the availability of players for international duty has various windows, including for the Six Nations and for June inbound tours to the southern hemisphere, but they haven't dedicated a window for the Argentinian players so that they can rely on the clubs releasing them,'' O'Neill said.

''At this stage they are relying on the good grace of the clubs and we're not convinced that's enough certainty. We are saying to the IRB that we can't go from a very successful Tri Nations to a Four Nations home and away if Argentina can't have a watertight position on ensuring their best players are available.

''It's a long way from Buenos Aires to Auckland to Sydney to Johannesburg, and for all the costs that we incur in going into this Four Nations, as well as convincing the broadcasters that it will be as good as the Tri Nations, well I do not want to take that punt unless the IRB not only provides the money, but also the regulatory framework to make sure the Pumas are at full strength.''

adding to my last point Super squads bend the rules all the time as the game changes so make concesions for Argentina; and let Braidy stay at the Reds, peace catchya

Hopefully I'm not to late for comments, but wouldn't it make loads of sense for sanzar (and some Japanese clubs) to specifically target Argentine players like the sharks tried? they would add forward grit to the firing ANZAC back lines and Latin flair to the SA squads it would improve their squad and our comp(s) the cost would be worth it.

Andy #14 you may be forgetting that the argies have come close to beating the AB's over there a few years back. They have always been tough tests when played in BA.

dyl # 5 - re Pumas on Twickenham, already happened mate. And it wasn't pretty to watch either. Dull kick and clap rubbish with the odd droppy thrown in.

Rugbynut #1 - actually, it doesn't mean anymore rugby as the ABs will play 1 less game v Aus & SA, but this will be made up by 2 games against Arg. Same amount of rugby, just a lot more travel which is probably a bad thing.

Agree that it should be their #1 side, but don't think it will make much difference. They've never succeeded here, and it would be about 5 years before you'd even have them as favourites at home. Granted, they'll be a bigger success than Italy have been in the 6N but coming last by 1 point or 100 points still doesn't make them a worthwhile entrant. I think they should be added to the Pacific Nations comp with the JnrABs and if they can do well there then let them stepup.

Yip, Pat #12 I agree with what you're saying. I think over time some people start to get bored of competitions as they grow older and get repetitive and they want something new, something fresher and different to keep their interest up. It wasn't the greatest thing they ever did when they decided to expand the Super 12 by adding two more teams into it. Now they're adding another Australian outfit into the mix, but they're having to bring in foreigners to make up the numbers. I think they need to change the competition structures rather than just tinkering with the rules to get a better spectacle, which I suppose is what they're aiming for next year by introducing a conference style tournament and by adding Argentina into the Tri Nations in 2012, providing the NH Clubs play ball and release the players.

I lost interest in the Tri-Nations (and the Super 14) years ago. There are too many games saturating the sports calendar and media, and too many All Black hakas reducing the mana of something that was once unique and prestigious. However, I have to admit that the prospect of seeing the Pumas play would probably get me watching again. For a while at least.

Get the Pumas in to the Four Nations as well as a super conference of half a dozen teams from the America's

PUMAS! PUMAS! PUMAS! FTW!

I agree, only the best team should play, no "B" side...

i agree with dyl#5 if all their players play in europe, i wonder if they just join that comp...

And another reason to have a global season! where everyone plays at the same time, regardless...all Internationals at the same time...would save clubs headaches...

We're already playing in the summmer (starting games in march)...

And, once the Pumas are part of an expanded 4-nations, How about having the winners of the 4-nations play a game against the winners of the 6-nations? (In a world cup year, rest these competitions to allow for World Cup time) OR if the 4-nations v 6-nations thing is a bit too close to being an unofficial "World Cup final", what about playing the Heineken Cup winner v the Super-14 winner? Rugby League already has a World Club Challenge, but Union has a far wider reach and could really make this concept into something HUGE!
