Former All Blacks try-scoring machine Jonah Lomu has surprised a number of unsuspecting members of the public in a Dublin pub with an intricate quiz machine prank.

Lomu, who scored 37 tries from 63 tests for New Zealand, was in Ireland to help launch Heineken's "It's Your Call" Rugby World Cup 2015 campaign and gave his all to baffle a number of beer-drinking patrons.

Guests at the Harry Byrnes pub were encouraged to put coins into a quiz machine, oblivious to the fact that the all-time World Cup record try-scorer was squeezed inside the booth.

As punters answered on-screen questions, Lomu then quickly signed a rugby ball, complete with the person's name and a compliment such as "love the top" or "like the beard", before pushing it out of the vending slot.

When Ireland rugby legend Shane Horgan made his way into the pub and helped Lomu out of his hiding spot for a shift change, the crowded pub erupted with laughter.

"The Irish are known for their sense of humour across the world, so I was delighted to put that to the test," Lomu said afterwards. "Seeing peoples' faces as they tried to figure out what was going on was a real highlight."
