Sonny Bill Williams scored his first try in Japan on Saturday but his Panasonic Wild Knights were beaten 32-22 by Toshiba Brave Lupus.
Williams scored in the 25th minute to cut Toshiba's lead to 10-8 but former All Black Steven Bates scored his second try early in the second half to give Toshiba a 20-10 lead.
The Wild Knights were runners-up last season and expectations were high with the addition of Williams but the team is off to a modest 2-2 start and is in fifth place.
Williams quit New Zealand's All Blacks to pursue more lucrative opportunities in Japan and Australia. He is reportedly earning $1.2 million for his 12-game stint in Japan.
After Japan, Williams will play in Australia's National Rugby League.
