Jonny Wilkinson has been voted the European Player of the Year for 2013 after guiding Toulon to its first European Cup title.

The former England flyhalf booted 11 points - including a match-clinching conversion in the second half - in Toulon's 16-15 win over Clermont-Auvergne in Saturday's final in Dublin, extending his flawless goal-kicking record in the competition's knockout stage.

The 33-year-old Wilkinson was presented with a gold medal at a ceremony in Dublin. He says "to receive an award of this importance towards the end of my career is really special."

Clermont trio Julien Bonnaire, Wesley Fofana and Sitiveni Sivivatu and Leinster No. 8 Jamie Heaslip were also on the short list for the award, which takes into consideration performances in the Heineken Cup and the second-tier Challenge Cup.
