England captain Dylan Hartley missed out on the Lions squad to tour New Zealand and face the All Blacks in three tests.

Dylan Hartley is in line for a late call-up to the Lions after an injury to Welsh hooker Ken Owens.

England captain Hartley was one of the major omissions when Warren Gatland's side to tour New Zealand was announced.

However, the NZ-born hooker has moved back into the reckoning after Owens was injured in training with his Scarlets side this week, and ruled out of their Pro12 semifinal against Leinster on Friday (Saturday NZ Time).

The nature of the injury wasn't elaborated on. Owens is expected to be assessed by the Lions, who are in camp in Wales.

"Hopefully, Ken is going to be fine, although he is missing a big game for the Scarlets this weekend,'" Lions assistant coach Neil Jenkins said on Thursday (Friday NZT).

"With a bit of luck, everything is going to be OK for the Lions.'"

Owens was one of three hookers in the 41-man Lions squad, beside Ireland captain Rory Best and England's Jamie George.

The Lions leave for their 10-match tour on May 29.
