Westpac Stadium officials are investigating whether a security official who tackled a female spectator during a pitch invasion used excessive force.

Two women walked on to the field during Saturday night's All Blacks test against France.

Though one lifted her arms as if to surrender, the security guard ran toward her then bundled her to the ground in a diving tackle.

A spectator said he was shocked by the incident. "She had her hands up in the air, saying 'OK the game is up', but he just kept sprinting across and smashed her with a big rugby league-style tackle."

Two people were arrested for pitch invasions.

Stadium chief executive David Gray said the security officer was trying to protect players but his use of force was being investigated. "His job was to secure that person as fast as he could. I guess he committed himself to that. The outcome looks like he used a little bit more force than necessary. The way to avoid that is by not invading the field."
