Eaton had not shaved since suffering a serious knee injury last April during the Super 14, ruining his rugby World Cup dream.

Now recovered he played a full 80 minutes against the Waratahs in Sydney on Saturday.

To celebrate his return to rugby, after ten months of hard work and rehabilitation, Eaton decided to go under the razor to raise money for cancer charity CanTeen.

The event today raised over $5000 -- with Eaton's mullet and beard auctioned for $200.

Fans had the chance to pledge their support on the Hurricanes' website before today's cut and shave -- with the highest bidder earning the right to shave Eaton's beard.

A $500 anonymous donation meant a CanTeen member got to be a barber for a day.

Malcolm Gillies from the Gillies Group, who made his premises available for the event, cut Eaton's hair , while CanTeen member, Hamish O'Connor shaved his beard.

Eaton later returned the favour by cutting the hair of some of the employees of the Gillies Group.

M r O'Connor, 20, said it had "felt good" to shave Eaton's beard.

"I was worried that I would cut him, so I was cautious."

There was no blood so that was good, he said.

His twin brother, Alexander, who suffered from cancer when he was younger, said meeting the former All Black had been "cool", "He's huge", he said.

Eaton said it felt weird without his beard and long hair.

"I feel skinny, eh."

He said he would now be able to see the ball a bit easier without all his hair in his eyes.
