All Black legend Wayne "Buck" Shelford brought back the grunt in Reefton yesterday, scooping the champion coal-shovelling title.

Shelford joined current All Blacks Adam Thomson, Andy Ellis and Wyatt Crockett for the West Coast stop in the All Blacks Roadshow.

About 700 people turned out to see the All Blacks take on the locals in a range of rugby challenges, including try-scoring, catching and kicking.

The roadshow finished with a round of coal-shovelling races.

Shelford and Thomson won the title by filling a large coal bucket in 20 seconds.

Shelford said the day was "a bit of fun".

"It's always nice to visit the heartland; a few of my cousins have come out to see me," he said.

Reefton resident Shane Ashcroft said the roadshow had been "a bit of humour".

It was good to have the players visit the small town and enjoy coal-shovelling since it was "something from the town's old days", he said.

The All Blacks roadshow will move on to Naseby, where the players will compete in curling challenges.
