Expected wintry conditions in Christchurch on Saturday night for the Bledisloe Cup rugby test.

Rain, biting southerlies and lowering snow levels from around midday on Saturday look likely to make it a bleak and freezing evening when the All Blacks take on the Wallabies at AMI Stadium.

Snow is predicted down to 300m across Canterbury on Sunday.

MetService spokesman Bob McDavitt said spectators should wrap up very warmly as rain could turn to sleet during the big game.

The weather would come as more of a shock to the Wallabies than the All Blacks, he said.

Damn straight! (Although it still would be great if the games could be played during the day.)

'...I've not heard one good reason why these games can't be played on the Saturday afternoon....'

I'll tell you then - it's money for live TV viewing rights. You go to the game, and pay handsomely for the privilage, so that SKY can create a seriously attractive well rounded package for pay-to-view TV. Sounds and images from a night crowd are needed to enhance the previously sometimes static nature of the game.

All Blacks playing in NZ is not about New Zealand supporters going to the game - its about the people who wish they could afford it and must watch it on TV. If you go as a spectator you really should be paid -- you are part of the performance.

Honestly, this policy of night tests in the middle of winter is insane sometimes and degrades the quality of the rugby. We need indoor stadiums if they insist on night tests.

What do you expect Footy at night early August and in the South Island. Who has rocks in their heads?

The players are professionals, they get paid to play in all sorts of conditions. They can just deal with it. Would hate to see them make a farce of the already farcical game that is rugby by turning out a performance better suited for amatuers and schoolboys

Southerlies will be as bitter as Robbie Deans...
