Richie McCaw may not be a sir yet - but he can now call himself doctor.

The All Blacks captain was recognised today at Lincoln University, where he received an honorary doctorate in recognition of his sporting achievements.

McCaw was enrolled in an agricultural science degree at Lincoln before he was picked for the New Zealand under-19 rugby squad.

He was the fourth generation of his family to attend the university.

McCaw, who is the second All Blacks captain after Wilson Whineray to be honoured at a graduation ceremony, can now add doctor of natural resources to his list of accolades.
