Rugby Southland chief executive Roger Clark admits convincing key player Jason Kawau to stick with the Stags is at the top of his to-do list.
The Stags second five-eighth is weighing up his options as he eyes a possible overseas stint with his partner Anneke Woodyard following the Super 14 season next year.
If Kawau were to pick up a contract overseas, it would rule him out of helping Southland attempt to defend the Ranfurly Shield.
Clark said yesterday he fully understood the reasons behind Kawau wanting to head overseas but he indicated he would still be doing his upmost to convince the Stags vice-captain to stay for another season.
"It's no coincidence our defence has been so good. He's the rock in the backline and we'd love to have him back," Clark said.
Kawau has figured in turning around Southland's fortunes since shifting from Otago in 2005.
Kawau has publicly said he wouldn't want to play for any New Zealand province other than Southland but that a stint overseas was inviting. He will play for the Hurricanes during next year's Super 14 season.
