South Canterbury storm on to Lochore Cup final
South Canterbury will play in their second Lochore Cup final in succession after a convincing second-half performance saw them outgun neighbours Mid Canterbury 48-20 in Timaru.
In a tight first half, South Canterbury had the benefit of a strong wind and led 17-13, but only because Mid Canterbury's Solomona Paraki left his kicking boots behind.
But South Canterbury were superb in the second half, running in five tries to add to centre Steve Burt's excellent double before the break.
Wing Liam Edwards also landed a 60-metre penalty, the biggest seen on Alpine Energy Stadium for a long time.
Even with a man in the sinbin, South Canterbury scored early in the second half as they starved Mid Canterbury of any decent possession. In the other Lochore Cup semifinal, Buller beat Poverty Bay 44-22 in Westport.
After yesterday's Meads Cup games, East Coast will host Wanganui in Ruatoria next weekend after winning 26-15 against North Otago in Ruatoria. Wanganui edged Wairarapa Bush 23-20 in their semifinal.
