Hawke's Bay assistant coach Danny Lee couldn't resist the offer of a top job in Japan.

The Hawke's Bay Magpies are losing backs coach Danny Lee to the Japanese club scene.

Lee, 41, who has been with the Magpies since 2012, has been named head coach of the Honda Heat and will take up his position next month.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Hawke's Bay Rugby both as a player and in recent years as a coach. Hawke's Bay is in my blood and always will be but I am really looking forward to the opportunity to be a head coach and to work towards helping Honda to strive for success in the near future," former All Blacks halfback Lee said.

Magpies CEO Mike Bishop said they wouldn't stand in the way of Lee's opportunity to advance his coaching career.

Lee, a former Magpies captain, has been co-coaching Hawke's Bay with Craig Philpott.

During Lee's coaching tenure, the Magpies won the Ranfurly Shield twice and the 2015 ITM Cup Championship.
