Collins announced his retirement from the sport in New Zealand on Monday.
Despite being warmly praised for a decade of sterling service it emerged on Tuesday the 48-test veteran would not have featured in Henry's 26-man squad to be named in Christchurch on Sunday.
Henry said the 27-year-old's form for the Hurricanes did not warrant his inclusion in the squad to prepare for a one-off test against Ireland in Wellington on June 7 and two subsequent matches after World Cup runnersup England.
Henry agreed with Collins' decision to seek a release from his New Zealand Rugby Union contract a year before it expired in order to take a break from the game.
Collins is expected to ultimately join the exodus to Europe although he insists he currently has no firm plans.
Although a mainstay of the All Blacks in recent years, Henry admitted Collins had initially been overtaken by Crusaders loose forward Kieran Read and Jerome Kaino of the Blues.
"I think it's the correct decision (for Collins to retire)," Henry told Radio Sport today.
"He wouldn't have got in the All Blacks in this first selection anyway.
"His form had wavered and he'd be the first to agree with that.
"I talked to him two weeks ago and said to him that it (blindside) was a very competitive position and that other guys were playing better than he was at the time.
"We watched him play against the Blues for the Hurricanes and the semifinal against the Crusaders last weekend and things didn't change a great deal in that respect.
"He was battling to make the side but I don't think that was part of his decision. I think he made the decision to move on some time ago."
Kaino is among a 25-man training group who met in Auckland today while Otago loose forward Adam Thompson has also been included after a strong campaign with the battling Highlanders.
Read is sure to come into calculations providing he emerges from the Super 14 final against the Waratahs on Saturday unscathed.
Do you agree with Graham Henry's assessment, would you have picked Jerry Collins in your test squad? Post your comments below.

I am not a NZ fan or a Collins fan, but why would the coach bash a retired player? The player actually saved the coach being critisised by Collins fans for leaving him out, but he had to go and open his mouth!
I think NZ will suffer because of the loss of Deans. He was the one coach I thaught deserved better, just like Heineke Meyer in SA deserved better.
Henry, up to this point i still had respect for you. But after your backstabbing and totally unnesssary jibes at JC...Sorry bud ...! All the best to you and yours Jerry, you dont need luck, you make your own!
Like others, I agree with Henry but I have no problem with him emphasising that Jerry's form has been lacking. Maybe it will help send a warning out to the other All Blacks: if you want to be in the squad then you'll have to work for it, nothing is guaranteed etc.
All the best though Jerry -you're a legend!
Jerry's has left the game in style with that final kick in Wellington As he stated he gave it his all and I don't think he bagged anyone as he did all his talking on the field where it matters. Why Graham Henrys has made that comment about one of world rugbys most respected players not making his squad god only knows. I'm a fan of Henry and the Three wise men but that statement wasn't needed. He needs to have a look at himself in the mirror as Graham knows on form there is one Coach that is above all in NZ at present including himself and his name is Robbie Cheers Jerry always enjoyed watching you play and hearing that you were still turning out for your club rugby when it allowed "Awesome mate Kia Kaha"
A disgraceful thing for Henry to say, what a kick in the guts to an All Black thats given his all,no wonder these guys are all heading overseas and lets face it jerry was one guy who questioned the rotation system etc.Henry had to have a personal snipe before Jerry left, you lack class Henry, get out now
What purpose did this serve ?
Jerry Collins demands huge respect from players, opposition and fans alike. He is hugely popular with rugby folk of all colours, nations and creed. Obviously Henry and the NZRU knew he would be unavailable so why put the boot in to such a popular player, one who has served NZ rugby with considerable distinction.
I cant think of ONE reason why Henry needed to say this. But having seen the shameful way we turfed our greatest and longest-serving cricket Captain, it is obviously a problem we NZers have and not just confined to rugby.
Hang your head in shame, Mr Henry. I cant imagine Robbie Deans ever lowering himself to such gutter-respect as this.
About time Henry pulled his head in,remarks like that against J.C,are uncalled for.Its a wonder any good player would want to be coached by him.
Well done Jerry. Bloody good player, for a long time. Enjoy the future, whatever that is.
As to Henry's comments, I agree with above, he's a prize p.... in my opinion.
But it raises another question that I think needs asking ?. The number of players leaving to go elsewhere is unprecedented, as stated above some nowhere near there twilight years. Why ??. Is it just the money as widley reported, or is the attraction somewhat reduced under Henry's regime, for players who have been there. Are we losing some un-necesarily.
Maybe Messers Hinton and company from this web site might want to have a look at that .
Yeah agree with fellow comments. Henry is right but I think his comments didn't need to be made. Henry seems to be such an arrogant "I am always right" sort of guy who wants to have the final say. Good luck Jerry. You may not have played your best this year but you had the guts to say "yeah my heart's not in it anymore so I'll step aside". That's class. Henry's comments are not.

Jerry Collins is nothing short of the MAN a hero if you will. I like most i would imagine have the up most respect for the man. I mean who else have we looked to when an opponent has gotten the better of some of the boys?ie The caveman from France. Yup up steps Mr Collins and restores the mana. GH needs to get it RIGHT and give players the respect they have earnt.
To much Jerry Collins thanks for your example
