A couple of Hurricanes wider training squad members upstaged some of the big boys in the franchise's annual 24km Surf to Park run-bike-run from Lyall Bay to the Mt Vic lookout.

Manawatu flanker Callum Gibbins and Hawke's Bay hooker Ash Dixon beat the 14-strong field home on Saturday morning, both going under the race record set 12 months ago by James Marshall.

Gibbins' winning time was 58mins 37sec, 33sec in front of Dixon.

Marshall's winning time was just under the hour.

The race used to be quite an event but with the All Blacks excused these days it has lost some of its lustre.

It starts with a 1km run from Lyall Bay, followed by a 21km bike ride to Hay St and finally a punishing 2km hill run to the Mt Vic lookout.

Lock Jeremy Thrush chased home the two rookies and can safely tuck into his Christmas lunch tomorrow with few fears about his fitness.

What did you make of the 2014 Super Rugby season?

It was a cracker and the best team won the title.

The Crusaders were robbed in the final.

It was a bit of a snorefest and the Kiwi teams largely disappointed.
