Wellington fullback Jason Woodward has had a nightmare start to his Super Rugby career with the Melbourne Rebels, injuring a finger that will keep him sidelined for six weeks.

The lively 22-year-old was facing surgery on the finger today and is only expected to be back in action by about round four of the competition that kicks off on February 15.

Woodward, a former New Zealand under-20 representative, has made a big impression in Melbourne since joining on a two-year contract and was tipped to be the starting No 15 for the tournament opener.

But he injured tendons in the finger when it was hooked in a team mate's shorts in preseason training drill.

Woodward said he was "gutted" at the early setback to the next stage of his exciting career.

The Rebels face the Waratahs in a trial match this weekend.
