Hurricanes captain Conrad Smith has been named to start against the Reds with prop Jeffery Toomaga-Allen the only change to the side that lost to the Blues.

Smith's recovery from the head knock he took at Westpac Stadium on Saturday night is tracking well enough for him to fly out to Brisbane today with his team-mates.

And though he will continue to be monitored on arrival, Smith is expected to run on to Suncorp Stadium on Friday night in the No 13 jersey.

Toomaga-Allen returns after a week off due to a concussion of his own to take his place at tighthead prop ahead of Ben May, who drops out of the 22.

There are two further changes in the reserves where hooker Motu Matu'u and lock James Broadhurst come into the squad.

Matu'u missed the Blues match due to a pectoral injury and takes Ash Dixon's place in the No 16 jersey.

Broadhurst is in for Mark Reddish, who was ruled out due to a hamstring strain.

Coach Mark Hammett has otherwise stuck to the players who lost their way during a 34-20 loss to the Blues.

Meanwhile, the Reds will be without lock and captain James Horwill, who has still not recovered from the ankle injury that kept him out of the side's opening two matches.

The Reds lost 24-6 to the Brumbies first up in Canberra, then beat the Waratahs 25-17 in Brisbane.
