Sir Graham Henry will face the Sanzar judiciary over his comments made around the TMO and refereeing of this year's Super Rugby competition.

Sanzar has brought a misconduct complaint against the Blues' defensive coach and a hearing will take place via phone conference at 6pm on Sunday.

Henry's comments came after some contentious calls in the Blues' 23-3 loss to the Crusaders.

Asked about Frank Halai's no-try ruling and TMOs' seeming reluctance to award tries this season, Henry waded in.

"It was obvious to me. I don't know; he was probably a blind TMO, was he? It's an obvious try," he said.

"Then we had a situation where we had attacked under the sticks. Frank [Halai] went very close to scoring and Andy Ellis is standing in front of the ball. It's a penalty try, isn't it?

"Those sorts of things frustrate you, but that's part of the game."

Henry also had some more general comments on the way the game is officiated now.

"When you're watching the game you see so many offsides in the line from a ruck," he said.

"We are sitting in the coaches' box, and I'm sure the Crusaders coaches are doing the same thing, saying 'offside ref, offside line umpires'. Those are the things they're there for, not some controversial knock-down of the ball in the 5-metre channel and a yellow card.

"Just do the basics right, just like you ask the rugby players to do, and you have a good game of footy.

"I would say there was probably 20 times at the weekend when guys were offside from the ruck. And we get this one controversial did he knock the ball down? He's not good enough to do that. They threw the ball at him. He did a good job getting in the road and he gets yellow-carded. That's bullshit.

"Just referee the basics, stay onside at ruck, and we have a good game of footy."

What do you make of the Blues signing Jimmy Cowan?

It's a great move. His experience is needed.

The jury's still out for me. Let's wait and see.

It's a desperate move. Respectfully, Cowan is past it.

The Blues have bigger worries than halfback.
