The defending Super Rugby champion Chiefs will again include a pre-season trial against the Reds in Queensland as part of the preparations for their title defence.

The Queensland Rugby Union has confirmed the teams will met in Toowoomba on February 8, the weekend after a proposed match between the Chiefs and Heineken Cup holders Toulon in France.

The Chiefs' build up for the defence of their maiden Super Rugby crown in 2012 included a trial against the Reds in Sunshine Coast last February, a match they won 20-8.

Next year's clash with open the Reds trial programme with head coach Richard Graham saying the two-time champions would provide a useful launching pad.

"We have aspirations of winning another Super Rugby title in 2014 and playing the winners of last year's competition in our first trial match will be an excellent starting point," Graham said.

"The Chiefs have won successive Super Rugby titles and will provide us with a physical and high-paced contest.

"We want to challenge ourselves to be the best and deliver the best possible rugby we are capable of playing," he said.

The Reds open their campaign with an away game against the Brumbies in Canberra on February 22; the Chiefs start their bid to match the Crusaders three-peat of titles (1998-2000) the night before in Christchurch.
