The University of Otago will be one of the Highlanders' major sponsors for at least the next two years.

An announcement today confirmed the university's logo would appear on the team jersey, the Dunedin Stadium field and on digital signage around the ground.

Highlanders chief executive Roger Clark would not say what the two-year sponsorship deal was worth citing ''commercial sensitivity'' but did confirm it would mean the franchise would meet its sponsorship budget this year and go a long way towards breaking even for the season.

''We congratulate them on becoming the first university in the country to align with a professional rugby franchise in such a significant way,'' Clark said.

''Good business strategy, innovation and support for the community have long been hallmarks of the University of Otago and this unique partnership certainly continues that legacy.''
