Stormers flanker Schalk Burger has been named to start against the Crusaders in Christchurch on Saturday night.

With flanker Siya Kolisi and lock Rynhardt Elstadt ruled out of the Super Rugby match, De Kock Steenkamp and Burger have been selected as replacements.

Elstadt has been ruled out of the Australasian tour with a shoulder injury and will be out of action for four to six weeks, but Kolisi has been given this week off and will then be back in the selection frame.

"Rynhardt will see his specialist when he returns home to Cape Town," Stormers coach Allister Coetzee said.

"It's the same shoulder he had an operation on after last year, and the specialist here said it's quite badly inflamed.

"He will be out of action for four to six weeks, and for that reason we have called up Jurie van Vuuren, who was part of the Western Province under-21 team last year and can, like Rynhardt, play at No 7 and No 4.

"We're fortunate to be able to rest Siya [at loose forward], where we have more depth, so hopefully this week off will see his AC joint in a better condition next week."

Burger regains the team vice-captaincy after missing last Friday's nailbiting 19-18 win over the Hurricanes in Cape Town with a mild groin strain, while Steenkamp will make his first appearance of the season after recovering from a groin injury.

At halfback, in an unforced change, Nic Groom will earn his first start of 2014, while the loss of Elstadt and Manuel Carizza, who has a wrist injury, sees Ruan Botha earn a place on the bench on debut.

Louis Schreuder will join Botha on the bench this week, along with experienced first five-eighth Peter Grant, who joined the team from Japan this week, and new wing and former Chiefs representative Sailosi Tagicakibau, who joined the Stormers from London Irish a few days ago.

"Losi [Tagicakibau] has fitted in very well, in the change-room after the Hurricanes match and in the gym this week," Coetzee said.

"We're looking forward to him making an impact in our first full [training] session tomorrow and come Saturday against the Crusaders."

Stormers: Jaco Taute, Kobus van Wyk, Jean de Villiers (captain), Damian de Allende, Gio Aplon, Demetri Catrakilis, Nic Groom, Duane Vermeulen, Schalk Burger, Deon Fourie, De Kock Steenkamp, Michael Rhodes, Frans Malherbe, Scarra Ntubeni, Steven Kitshoff. Replacements: Tiaan Liebenberg, Oliver Kebble, Pat Cilliers, Ruan Botha, Nizaam Carr, Louis Schreuder, Peter Grant, Sailosi Tagicakibau.
