The New Zealand women's tennis team have missed the chance for promotion to the playoffs after a 3-0 loss to Japan in the Fed Cup in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

New Zealand number two Marina Erakovic was beaten 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1 by Ayumi Morita, while number one Sacha Jones went down 6-2, 6-4 to Kimiko Date-Krumm.

The pair went on to lose the doubles 6-3 6-4.

Coupled with a disappointing 2-1 defeat by Korea on Wednesday, the loss to Japan puts the team out of contention for the Asia Oceania World Group two playoff on Saturday.

They conclude the tournament against Indonesia today.
