Marina Erakovic has avoided the seeds and will play world No 40 Alize Cornet from France in the first round of the Australian Open.

They have played against each other once in the past with Cornet winning that match, at the ASB Classic in 2010, 6-4 6-3.

However, that was at a time when Erakovic was going through a bad slump in her form and is playing to a higher level now.

Cornet played in Brisbane last week and was badly beaten by Serena Williams 6-2 6-2 in the second round.

If the New Zealand No 1 comes through that match she will likely play Venus Williams in her second match.

The pick of the first round matches is Germany's Sabine Lisicki against former world No 1 Caroline Wozniacki.
