Vesnina pulls out of Auckland WTA tournament

World No 25 Elena Vesnina has had to pull out of the Auckland WTA tennis tournament because of an injury to her right ankle.

The popular Russian would have made her sixth appearance at the Classic had she come.

Her best result in Auckland came in 2009 when she made it to the final before losing to Elena Dementieva.

Tournament director Karl Budge was informed overnight by her agent about the injury and that she wouldn’t be able to make it to New Zealand.

Vesnina would have been the fifth seed at the Classic, but her withdrawal means that another fan-favourite, Julia Goerges moves directly in to the main draw.

The German’s world ranking of 72 initially had her next on the list to get into the main draw, but she had been given one of the wildcards to ensure that she didn’t have to enter the qualifying tournament.

Now that Goerges doesn’t need that wildcard, Budge will pick another player to give it to.
