The family of Georgian luge slider Nodar Kumaritashvili, who was killed in a training crash hours before the opening of the Vancouver Olympics, will receive an undisclosed insurance settlement.

Organisers of last month's Winter Games said on Tuesday that his family qualifies for a death benefit, although it is not known how much money will be paid to Kumaritashvili's parents or when they will receive the sum.

The organising committee took out an insurance policy on about 5,000 Olympic athletes and officials for the Winter Olympics.

Kumaritashvili's family has received money from several private donation efforts, with the International Luge Federation giving about $US14,000 to the Georgian family.
