New Zealand flagbearer Shane Dobbin has missed out on a medal in the men's 5000m speed skating event, after ending sixth after his heat.

Dobbin, racing in the eighth heat against Russian Ivan Skobrev, finished in 6:26.90 to be sixth with five pairs left to race at the Adler Arena Skating Centre. He eventually finished 14th, with a time that fell just outside his best achieved in 2011.

Skobrev completed the 12 1/2 laps in 6:19.83, just 0.32 seconds behind then-leading compatriot Denis Yuskov. The Russians would eventually finished sixth and seventh as Sven Kramer, Jan Blokhuijsen and Jorrit Bergsma completed a medal clean-sweep for the Netherlands. Kramer's time was 16.14 seconds quicker than Dobbin.

Dobbin, who led the New Zealand team into Fisht Stadium during yesterday's opening ceremony, was behind Skobrev from the second crossover but, despite falling over 10 seconds behind, finished strong to end 7.07 seconds behind the Russian.

The 34-year-old bettered his result from Vancouver four years ago, when he finished 17th in a time of 6:33.38.

Dobbin will also compete in the men's 10,000m, his more favoured event, on February 18.
