I recently read about absurd taxi fares from Auckland airport, and experienced this myself.

While visiting family at the hotel right by the international terminal, I parked my car a couple of kilometres down the road at The Warehouse.

When I went to return to my car, my family insisted I catch a taxi for safety reasons, because it was dark.

I caught a white taxi, (I can't remember the company) and was charged $40 for a short 2-3km trip.

The driver said he had to charge me for a city trip, even though I wasn't going to the city.

I argued that it clearly said on his car how much it cost per km, but I still had to pay it.

He didn't have his meter running either.

Am I wrong in thinking this is absolutely ridiculous?
