If not the All Blacks, then Wales
If the All Blacks don't win the Rugby World Cup, who could you tolerate taking it out? Our readers share their best case scenarios of our worst rugby nightmare...
If not us, then Wales or Ireland, for a few reasons.
Firstly, they're ranked fourth and fifth in the world, so it's not a totally impossible prospect.
Secondly, they're both underdogs. Wales has never made it past the semi-finals, despite some good games, and Ireland has never even been that far.
Thirdly, they bring the home nations factor into it. If England is knocked out, which seems likely, then for the tournament to continue having home support, the English will probably swallow their pride and go for Wales. And there's bound to be the odd green supporter as well.
Fourthly, they're both northern hemisphere teams. If the Rugby World Cup is to maintain its position as a world tournament, it needs northern hemisphere support, and not be seen as an automatic win for southern teams (the hiccup of 2003 notwithstanding).
Fifthly, Ireland are Six Nations champions. It would be nice if they were to add a bit of gloss to that win.
While I really, really like the French national anthem, that's about the only part of France's game I do like so I could never support them. Scotland may be brave, but their players just don't have what it takes.
I'd love to see Ireland do it, but my second team is Wales. Cymru am byth.
