Would you give a transsexual a job?
I'm writing these articles to try and help the understanding of transsexuals.
I'm certainly not seeking your sympathy, but I'm hoping to foster some consideration of a sector in our society which is often misjudged and discriminated against.
Hell, those who know me will tell you I'm too pigheaded to want sympathy.
Discrimination you say? But we have the Human Rights Act and a Bill of Rights so it can't happen here. Yeah right, have another beer. Even the current Government flaunt it.
I'm on a benefit but want off.
I have many friends who are employers, some owners of big companies. I have asked them if I had the best CV of all applicants, would you give me the job? Their answer to me has always been a straight up ''no''.
When asked ''why not?'' I again get the same answer.
''I'd worry how my customers would take you.''
These were honest friends who said it how it is.
I'm a realist and understand. But is any employer out there going to say that to me so I can take them to the Human Rights Commission?
Don't be silly, they just ignore the application or, if I'm lucky, I'll get the ''thank you for the application but we are sorry you were unsuccessful at this time''.
So where others have problems getting employment because of age and lack of formal qualifications, I am also hindered by being a transsexual.
And if the prospective employer Googles my name or seeks me on Facebook, I'm dealt more setbacks because I have openly been an escort and started New Zealand's first legal transsexual parlour.
Again, I'm not seeking sympathy but understanding for transsexuals. But also don't snidely say ''that was your choice''.
Who in their right mind would choose to be transsexual? There was no choice. But there is ignorance from people who make silly statements when they haven't got a clue what it's really like.
So, if a transsexual applies to you for a job please consider them fairly as they are honest and want to work. We are just normal people.
