How great it is to be known around the world as a Kiwi, but greater still is to be known as a Kiwi world champ over a decade in a sport that can badly hurt you.

Ivan Mauger was just such a man. He came out of New Zealand with the enthusiasm and ability borne of a focus to be the best in his chosen sport, speedway bikes.

He represented New Zealand on many occasions in his own way, on circuits here and across the world.

In speedway you have no brakes, only a throttle for forward at a great rate of knots - generally on a track of wet clay.

Mauger is still involved in the sport, helping those that need advice, but will there ever be another like him?
