I'm still crying now
We inherited a stray staffy cross as a pup who I believe was deliberately dumped in our area.
My wife, who did not want a dog, walked the neighbourhood to try and find Rusty's owner but the only drive he recognised was ours.
We grew to like each other. Rusty was the excuse to go for a walk, defended our patch and gave us unconditional love.
Eventually, he wheedled his way to sleeping in our bedroom and in the last years enticed us to go to bed early as he wouldn't go without us.
When, finally, his backend works started to fail and he was in pain I had to take him to the vet.
The vet asked if I wanted to stay and hold him; I couldn't and I will never forget the short pleading small bark he gave: ''Please don't leave me''.
I cried and am crying now.
