Nestled on the northern edge of the Mackenzie Basin is the township of Lake Tekapo, and on the banks of this lake stands the famous Church of the Good Shepherd.

The church is arguably one of the most photographed in New Zealand, with views out the altar window of the lake and mountains. It is very difficult to get a shot without people in it as its visited at all hours of the day and night and people tend to just spring out of the ground and into your frame just as you are about to take the shot.

No one day is quite the same in Tekapo and as a photographer you are are spoiled for subject matter (see more photos in the gallery, left).

Known for its clear night skies and lack of light pollution, Lake Tekapo is a haven for astrophotographers.

A short drive from Lake Tekapo is the Mt Cook National Park.

The park covers a little over 700 square kilometres. Glaciers cover 40 per cent of the park area, notably the Tasman Glacier on the slopes of Aoraki/Mt Cook.

This is another photographer's wonderland and pretty near anywhere you point the lens you will find something to capture.

There are few places in New Zealand to rival these two locations and, most of the others, for me, are also in the South Island.
