Interview nightmares: You'll find a hubby
Some years ago, I was referred by an ex-colleague for a role in the Singapore office of a firm I had a great deal of respect for.
After being ambushed by an eight-person panel via teleconference (I was expecting two, tops), the first question I was asked - sans any small talk - was: are you married and do you have children?
Surprised by the size of the panel, and wishing to make a good impression, I answered truthfully; no, neither.
The spokesman for the panel (CEO of the Singapore and Hong Kong regions) then boldly declared: ''You should come to our Hong Kong office, you'll definitely find a husband there.''
At that point my interest waned and the interview started to drag.
But that didn't stop the CEO from expecting me to carry out an impromptu presentation on "what YOU can bring to OUR table" (read: shameless grovel for the job).
