Oh dear, last week's episode of Downton Abbey proved a shocker, back it raises the question: what has been the most unnecessary and shocking TV character's death?

Below is what I think, but leave your thoughts in the comments.

1. Lady Sybil Branson, Downton Abbey

Yes, the most talked about story right now on the world's most talked about TV drama series. 9.5 million viewers in the UK tuned in to watch the birth of the Bransons' baby only to come out of it in more shock than when Wrexham beat Arsenal in the FA Cup. But was Sybil's untimely death really necessary especially with all the drama already surrounding Downton?

2. Rita Bennett, Dexter

Rita Bennett was the one thing that kept me watching Dexter but that one moment where her body was found in a bath full of blood with her baby on the floor was the moment that turned me off Dexter forever. She was the character that made Dexter seem a bit more human but without her, is there any point?

3. Maude Flanders, The Simpsons

OK, what was the point of her death by a tyre?
