Wine was my friend, or so I thought Weather photo of the week: Sept 18, 2014

One of the treats of overseas travel, if you're in the right climate and the right city, is wandering through the city like Barcelona, Melbourne or Paris on a balmy evening, when the overbearing heat of the sun has gone and the temperature is perfect. Christchurch is my home and I'm here for the long haul, but let's be brutally honest, it only has a handful of evenings like that in a typical year. However, I think a cleverly designed Christchurch could have more.

My favourite memory of those sorts of evenings is of, believe it or not, San Antonio, Texas. That city turned a derelict canal in the middle of the city in to a restaurant-and-bar-lined river walk. It has made San Antonio one of the leading conference and tourism venues in the USA.

Christchurch doesn't have the climate but it does have a fantastic river. We need the vision to make Christchurch's central city riverbank pleasant and walkable in most weathers, We could build the structures to capture the heat and shield the river walkers from the easterly. Then bars and restaurants, not roads, could line the walkway.

That's my vision - go to it!
