I drive my car to work for several reasons:

1. Convenience: I can leave my door and park right next to work. I saves me half an hour each way.

2. Cost: I bring up to five people with me in my carpool. This helps make it more affordable and generally cheaper than public transport.

3. Comfort: The car is comfortable, we're not squashed up with strangers (especially that person who fails on the personal hygeine front).

4. Flexibility: If I need to go somewhere during the day or on the way home it is not an issue.

I would like to bike but living 60km from work, this is a bit impractical.

As for public transport, I believe it needs to be more convenient, cost effective and reliable.

At the moment, the public transport I would use is the train from Kapiti and it is not convenient. I'd still need to walk at each end (or another form of public transport) and I have no freedom to vary my route, or go anywhere during the day without aggravation. It is not cost effective, in fact I think it is quite expensive.

My car is much cheaper. As for reliability, public transport is getting better, but not enough to convince me to switch.
