Going by win/loss ratio, Richie McCaw is one of the best rugby players ever, however he achieved this simply by playing a huge number of games and playing them as captain.

He has had many so-called achievements in his career - he captained a winning Rugby World Cup team, captained the All Blacks on an unbeaten run, captained the All Blacks when they dominated the Tri-Nations and also captained a provincial side that dominated rugby. I, personally, am not a fan., but I respect McCaw as you don't often get a player that can influence rugby so much with his style of play.

For me the only other player that is as great as McCaw is Dan Carter.

McCaw has the edge from a captain's perspective, but Carter will always be the best number 10 in the world. I have only seen him fail on a few occasions.  The only thing lacking from his artillery is to use the drop goal more effectively.
