Holiday horror story: High seas at Phi Phi
On our honeymoon we stayed at Phuket, Thailand.
We took a day-trip boat ride out to Phi Phi Island with about 10 other tourists. It turned out to be a fairly small motor boat, which apart from some lifejackets had only a mobile phone for communication. The sea got rougher and rougher - my husband and I put our lifejackets on, some Australians spent the whole trip throwing up. It was very bad weather and we lost sight of the shore.
We took shelter in the relatively calm bay of a nearby island where they had filmed The Beach. After that brief respite (we could not use the jetty as it had disappeared in the rough sea so we were just moored), we set off again for Phi Phi Island. As the boat left the bay and we turned toward the island a wave hit it side-on and we lurched into the air. Everyone was screaming. We all thought we were going to capsize. People were all shouting in various languages, apart from the poor Aussies, who were still being sick.
When we got to Phi Phi I got off the boat, and walked on to the largest boat I could find and asked how much to go back on that boat, rather than the motorboat we had been on. Best $100 I ever spent, but not the best honeymoon experience. Should have gone to Akaroa.
