This is a photograph I took at the the Waitangi Roto Nature Reserve while visiting with my parents earlier this month.

The kotuku, white heron, is a stunning bird and very unique. The birds have lived at Waitangi Roto stream along the swampy banks for many years, and it is still unknown why.

The pristine, untouched, all natural and native conditions must contribute to this.

I took a tour with my parents, which we booked from Whataroa.

Apparently, there has been a decline in the number of people visiting the birds - this is a real shame because it is such a beautiful and priceless experience.

The birds are the most elegant of creatures.

I know the recession has really set people back but I think it is sad to think that, even though people are conserving in this economic rough patch, people would rather spend money on other things.

I would love to encourage more appreciation for one of the most beautiful things in the world. This photo was taken in the early afternoon with my dad's camera.

The heron came up and almost posed for the camera. Such beautiful form!
