Dating disasters: Can you walk in the gutter?

My most memorable first date is still used today - some 25 years on!
I am six feet tall so when dating I learned early on to look beyond height.
I met this man who was shorter than me, but not so short that if he hugged me he would have his face at my chest level.
We hit it off. He asked me out and I agreed.
All went very well and as he walked me home from the restaurant I think he felt it was time to take things a step further. So he leaned towards me and asked me in a suitably warm voice to - wait for it - walk in the gutter! Surprised, (well stunned actually), I replied, "what?". Then he explained, that if I were to walk in the gutter he would be able to put his arm around me and we could snuggle.
Despite the tempting thought, I declined, and we never did get to snuggle.
Since then whenever I hear a woman or girl bemoan their height my response is always: "At least you will never be asked to walk in the gutter!"
