I am Christchurch born and bred and left New Zealand on August 31, 2011.

My husband and I are both retired and felt Christchurch had nothing left to offer us.

My husband suffered a heart attack in June 2011 and was admitted to Christchurch Hospital. There are a lot of middle-aged people, suffering from heart-related problems and what the hospital say are caused through stress with the earthquakes.

I could not cope with them and decided to sell our home and move to Australia where we have family.

We, like many Christchurch people, realise Christchurch is not going to be built and back to the way of life as we knew it for many years to come, or back to normal if that is ever possible in our lifetime.

We feel we have made the right move. The New Zealand Government pays our pension and Australia makes up the difference. Took us around three months to get sorted and into the system.

The medical professionals have been great here and offering any help we needed to move forward and deal with the stress we have been through. Can't praise them enough.

We have returned to Christchurch twice since leaving and nothing has changed in the 18 months we've been away.

Christchurch will always be home to me, but we at least now have peace of mind. A lot of our Christchurch friends wish they were in the position to up and leave like we have. Many of them feel stuck because they are waiting on repairs and some haven't been paid out by insurance companies, it's bit of a no-win situation for them.
